Life Lessons in Answering Your Top Career Questions

Sometimes all it takes is hearing someone else ask a question to get your mind going. Today I am sharing the questions I get on repeat from other motivated women as they begin working with me and imagining the results that are possible. Consider this your primer to our first conversation!

Where do you get guidance on handling corporate contracts?

I actually have my own coach for this. I work with a coach who supports women by helping them secure contracts with corporations for the things that they do in business.

How do you juggle a full-time, high-level administrative job and a very time-intensive business?

I do not do it all, and I do not juggle; I outsource a lot. I invest the time to hire very capable, very knowledgeable, and very smart people. I hire them to do their job, and I allow them to do it. My job is to supervise, coach, train, and support them — but not to do their job for them and not to micromanage them.

Do you recommend negotiating salary when the offer is fair value?

Always negotiate. I don't care what they offer you. You always negotiate because it's not about fair value. It's about how much you desire to be paid at this stage in your career. And it’s also about communicating your priorities and what is important to you. Use this time to negotiate ways to support and honor what you value, whether it’s flex time for family responsibilities, volunteer work with your favorite charity, or travel for professional development. Make those part of the negotiation discussion.

What's a good way to ask your boss for a raise?

Before asking for a raise, you want to reflect on the work that you've been doing over the last six months and how that work has directly connected to the goals, vision, values, and desired outcomes of your employer. Collect those examples in a document, either written on a piece of paper or typed in an email. If you have a mid-year or annual review coming up, you can use that time or bring it to your next one-on-one.

What support element do you use to stay organized and dedicate appropriate time to your day-to-day and your career?

My life is a lot more integrated, so I don't have set work hours and set business hours. I would say the biggest support method I use is setting boundaries.
