Life Lessons in How to Know When Your Job is Destroying Your Health

“My body is breaking down.”

I hear statements like this much too often. So many high-achieving professional women have come to me after having physical and mental health scares due to working in a toxic work environment.

Considering the health implications of working in a toxic work environment, I’m sure that constantly performing in a position where you aren’t trusted, valued, recognized for your expertise, or paid at the level that you desire and deserve leads to negativity. That negativity takes its toll on your attitude, outlook, and personal interactions. If we don't recognize these impacts and identify the source, we can't navigate away from it which means they can continue to lead to even more severe, serious mental and physical health issues.

Now that we've identified what a toxic working environment can look like — being overworked and underpaid, being belittled and dismissed — let’s talk about the top warning signs that your body may be giving you. Feeling stressed, anxious, and dread as you approach work can wreak havoc on your mental health.

Work-related stress can cause physical indications such as:

  • body aches and pains

  • missed periods/early menopause

  • poor posture

  • undereating/overeating

  • gut health issues/stomach ulcers

  • heart palpitations/high blood pressure

  • lower libido

If you're experiencing these and starting to make the connections to work, I want you to know that there's a pathway out of that and that pathway is through mentorship.
