Life Lessons from The Best Career Advice Ever
Are you ready for some real talk?
Here it comes…staying stuck in your current role is damaging your professional reputation.
Yep, I said it. It is a hard truth, I know.
But, here is some more real talk, and it is the best career advice I have ever heard.
My mentor once talked to me about how my reputation was something I managed but didn't own. I took that feedback seriously from my mentor because I now realize that my career is not entirely my own.
The importance of making sure my name was spoken well of in rooms that I was never in was life-changing. Some of the biggest decisions about my life and career would be decided when I was not even in the room.
That can be tough to come to terms with. But, it is as true for you today as it was for me all those years ago.
A big part of your growth in development as a professional is about what other people say about you. Your ability to articulate your skills so well that your skillset is a calling card for other people. So that when they speak about your work, they can use the exact words you use to describe yourself and be able to speak as highly of you as you do of yourself.
You can get the degree, credentials, and certifications, but if you're not doing the real work of managing your reputation right in a meaningful way and managing your reputation in a way that can carry beyond the work that you do, then you are doing a disservice to yourself.
You don't have to grind yourself to a pulp. You don't have to exhaust yourself. You don't even have to do the most. You don't have to worry that people will start thinking of you as a slacker if you don't say yes to every project.
I'm here to disrupt those thoughts and tell you that you have it all wrong. Yes, putting in the work is essential, but there are so many other pieces to the puzzle. A big part of your growth in development as a professional is about what other people say about you.
You have to do the real work of managing your reputation in a meaningful way. Your reputation has to carry beyond the work that you do.
Have you become resentful or angry throughout your career because you keep raising your hand and trying to do the most, and you're still not advancing in your career?
Are you feeling stuck in a role that is no longer serving you?
Are you not asking for that raise or promotion you deserve?
Are you avoiding searching for a new role that aligns with your values?
Are you doing all of these things because you think it will ruin your professional reputation?
Girl, you have to kick those thoughts to the curb. You have to evict them from your mind. They have no place here anymore.
When we stay stuck in that mindset, it negatively impacts other areas of our lives. Our mental health, our physical health, our emotional health. And we CANNOT let these areas suffer any longer.
Before you dissolve yourself of your passion and purpose in goals for your career, I want you to take the time now to schedule a Mentor Moment.
It's an excellent opportunity for us to talk about where you are in your career development. I need to know what's working well because there probably is something working well despite everything that's going on in your career.
But I also want to know where you're stuck. Is it the amount of money you're making? Is it the role? Is it the industry? Is it your boss? Is it your coworkers? Is it where you live?
Once I discover where you are stuck, we can develop a plan to get you unstuck. I can then serve you well as a mentor and help you develop and take action on a plan to move you from where you are to where you want to be in your career development.
This is what I do as a mentor, and this is how I show up for my mentees and serve them well. I am so excited to help you make more money and have more impact in your industry by getting the support and direction that you need to advance your career in a meaningful way.
I do not want you to ruin your reputation. But, I also don't want your professional reputation to be ruined any further by staying stuck in a role that's no longer serving you.
Reach out to me today, and let's discuss the best career advice ever!
