Life Lessons for Living Beyond Your Resume

Ashley, I need to update my resume. 👩🏾‍💻

Ashley, I need to update my cover letter. 📝

Ashley, I need to update my...LinkedIn, CV, etc. 🖥

This is the conversation that I have had time and time again with professional women when we first meet.

It’s always “If I had a new resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, etc., then I could get the job I wanted.”

But, being completely honest with you, updating those items and thinking that’s all there is to it is not a good move. It’s certainly not a move that is going to get you the results that you want.

What I invite professional women to focus on goes beyond a resume and centers around strategies that really drive impact.

Now, we definitely discuss how to amp up your resume in Mentor Me programs. But I'll be honest with you, that is probably the easiest part of my programs. Most people want to update their resume right away because it feels like a tangible result, but it often doesn’t lead to that new job that you truly desire.

First, before you even think about your resume, we need to develop a career development strategy. And that strategy starts with being very clear on exactly what you're good at and being able to articulate what you're good at in a meaningful way.

Too often, women use statements about how great of a team player you are, you’re a hard worker, you’re creative. But you're not articulating the problem that you solve. You're not articulating for employers how what you do is transformative in your organization.

But, that is where Mentor Me can come in and help to fill that gap. I am able to teach women how to speak to the problem that they solve for organizations. And organizations are looking for problem solvers. Every organization has problems. The job description is just a list of organizational problems, and your job as the job seeker is to speak to how you will solve these problems.

Before we even touch your resume, we will develop a clear, concise, and confident way to quantify your expertise. I will teach you how to speak to your expertise and articulate your ability to solve that problem to employers.

You will no longer be fitting yourself into a box for employers to consider. You get to pick and choose what employers you want to work for and what problems you desire to solve. You get to become the box. No more filling out hundreds of applications for jobs you don’t really want. No more sitting through interviews with company’s whose problems you don’t want to solve. You get the chance to say here are the problems that I want to solve, and then find the employers who have these kinds of problems.

So, stop applying for jobs you don’t want. Stop telling employers you’ll take 60-70k when you know your baseline is 75k. Commit to operating in extreme integrity. Commit to getting the help that you need to speak to your expertise to be bold enough to say what you want.

Be strategic. Be intentional. Command the salary you desire. I can teach you how. Apply today to Mentor Me. And, I promise, we will update your resume too. 😉
