Life Lessons in How to Flip the Script
Maybe like me, you're a very linear thinker. You think, ‘This goes first, this goes second, and this goes third.’ If that's who you are and how you show up in the world, I want to invite you to flip the script because flipping the script and thinking differently about your approach to your job search can yield real success.
We need to think about our job search in a new and different way, in a less linear way. Today I'm going to walk you through what I call a career area of impact. It's a framework that I use in session two of my Mentor Me Accelerator program. It's also one of the reasons I see so much success in my programs — because we don’t start with the end in mind. We start our work together way further out than just the position you're looking for, and that yields real success for my mentees.
This strategy is successful because it helps you focus more narrowly over time but you don't start so narrowly minded that you are blinded to all of the other opportunities and possibilities available to you. We do need to develop a targeted and specific job search strategy to yield real results but we can no longer put ourselves out there, throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks. However, we can't allow ourselves to become pinpointed and linearly focused on one job opportunity, one title, or one role…that we pass by opportunities that present themselves.
