Life Lessons in How to Find Success in a Tight Job Market
There are simply not a lot of new jobs being created in the labor market right now. And with inflation, boomers are choosing to stay in their jobs longer which means that there’s not a lot of movement in the job market either.
Because unemployment is down, boomers are not retiring, and the labor market is stagnant, job seekers are finding it very difficult to job search successfully. In times like these, people tend to remain stuck in jobs where they are overworked and underpaid. With not a lot of moving parts or obvious paths, you should absolutely avoid doing these two things in today's tight labor market.
Don’t take the “cast a wide net” approach.
The reason why you don't want to do this is because it's exhausting. With not a lot to choose from, this is not the time to just put ourselves out there. We're going to avoid the widespread spray method of just applying for a million jobs and hoping they stick.
Don’t practice avoidance in your career.
This is the time to actually commit to getting the help that you need. We can't just DIY career development. We really need to make sure that we're being intentional about the next steps in our career and being strategic about actually going after things that we want with guided support.
