Life Lessons in How to Build a Budget that Prioritizes Professional Development

We are the first to put ourselves aside when money demands get high, when it's time to buckle down, or when we feel like we have other things to prioritize—whether it's our children, our spouses, family, or our community. More than anything I want to remind you, high-achieving professional women, that even when money is tight, you should choose yourself

When money gets tight and times get tough, it’s our nature to start cutting out everything that makes us feel good and cared for, and that brings joy. Because this happens so often to women in our society, I invite you to invest in yourselves, to prioritize the things that are important to you. Because flat out, we can't pour from an empty cup.

While you try to pour into everybody else to make sure they are taken care of, you end up completely depleted, right? And not having the things that you need to be able to take care of yourself leaves you no good to anybody, including yourself. We don't want to let anybody down or disappoint people who count on us, our income, or us showing up for them. Everybody's counting on us to be the breadwinner who brings home the bacon.

But more and more, our bacon is not enough to sustain our family, our friends, or our lives.
At some point, we need to begin to realize that it's not just about saving and restricting our budget by doing less, but it's also about making more money so that you can do more, feel more secure, and be able to provide.

When money is tight for my mentees and they feel stretched to invest in themselves through the program, they are always relieved to see the amazing results that come from their commitment to invest in themselves, putting themselves first, and advancing their careers.

I think that too often when it comes to our goals, one, they're not aligned with our values. And two, Instead of trying to figure out how you can cut out all the pleasure and all the things that really pour into your life, when it comes to money, how about thinking, “what can I do to use the skills, knowledge, talent, expertise I already have to make more money?”

One of the ways that you can do this is through expert-level mentorship. If that's where you are right now in your career, I invite you to join the Mentor Me Accelerator.

It can be so hard to choose ourselves when we have other people who are counting on us—aging parents, partners, children and godchildren, family, and friends in our church and  community. But I want this line to be a reminder to you: you cannot pour from an empty cup. And even when things are tight and you feel like the wallet is not stretching, stretch it towards you.
