Life Lessons in How I Rebounded From My Biggest Career Mistake

Today I'm talking about my most significant career mistake and how I rebounded. I will never forget this day in my career.

But I rebounded from that mistake. I got better. I got smarter, I got sharper, and I gained perspective. I'm a better leader because of the mistake.

The crux of my biggest career mistake is that I wasn't invested in the people I was working with at the time. I was invested in doing a good job. I was invested in my own career growth and development. I was even invested in the growth and development of my staff, but I wasn't invested in them individually as people.

The first way to rebound after a career mistake is to be clear about your mistake. The first step is acceptance. You have to accept what you did, understand what it was, and how to avoid it in the future.

The second is to take accountability for what you knew and didn't know. The most challenging part about rebounding after a mistake is taking responsibility for even things you didn't know.

Thirdly is to chart a course forward that includes amends where necessary. The third step to rebounding after making a mistake at work is to chart a path forward. That includes amends.

Finally, you need to forgive yourself. There is so much shame in making a mistake at work. There's so much shame and making a wrong decision. Most often, we are hardest on ourselves.

Do not let shame, embarrassment, or second-guessing keep you stuck in a mistake. You made a mistake. Take accountability, get clear, chart a course forward and forgive yourself for what you knew or didn't know. Forgive yourself, and don't get stuck.
