Life Lessons in Having the $30,000 Sentence
Today, I’m teaching you a sentence, a phrase, a paragraph, and a statement that will position you for a $30,000 salary increase.
I'm excited to teach you the skills to help you understand what it means to position yourself as an expert and a professional woman who's committed to using what she has to get what she wants, make more money, and have more impact.
The most significant gap that professional women experience when advancing their careers is they don't know how to talk about what they're good at. I understand that this is something women find challenging. Black women, specifically, are challenged because we struggle to speak to our expertise. We are taught to be humble and meek, not to say too much, and not be braggadocious. We don't want to offend anybody with our brilliance.
Because so many women don't know how to speak to their expertise, they downplay their skill set. And obviously, nobody will pay you well when you can't even speak clearly about your work.
One of the foundational pieces of the Mentor Me program is the “I Am” statement.
We often discuss the “I Am” statement—what its purpose is and why it's critically important for career development.
The purpose of creating the Mentor Me “I Am” statement is to prepare professional women to speak to their expertise and demonstrate outcomes in their work. One of the most significant problems and possibly the reason you're not getting callbacks after sending out your materials or the reason why you're not making the $80,000 or the $120,000 you want is because you're not speaking to the work that you do in a way that makes anybody take notice.
If you're not talking about the outcomes of the work that you've done, it appears that you’re just there to collect a check, that you just want to keep your head down so nobody says anything to you. The message that sends to anyone looking: “I don’t think I have any value.”
It is often true that women don't feel like they're driving results in their careers. Not being able to speak to your skill set is detrimental to your ability to make meaningful income in your industry.
The “I Am” statement teaches my mentees how to talk about the outcomes and what's on the other side of just doing things at work. The “I Am” statement we develop together in Mentor Me teaches my mentees how to talk about the demonstrated experience and level of expertise of their work. It teaches them how to talk about what they have done and its impact.
I invite you to listen to the video with this post to hear some amazing “I Am” statements from my mentees. You won't be disappointed.
