Life Lessons in 3 Things to Stop Doing to Secure a 6 Figure Salary
In previous blogs, I have shared strategies that you should start doing to help with your career advancement. But this week, we are going to cover some things you should stop doing to get that salary that you deserve.
So often people ask me, “Ashley, what should I do to advance my career? What should I do to make more money and have more impact at work?” Obviously, as a career coach, my job is to help you make more money and have more impact using the skills, knowledge, talent, and expertise that you already have.
However, there are things that you are likely doing right now in your job search, at work, and in your career development that are not helping you advance your career. They may be, in fact, getting in the way and impeding your career development.
First, we have to commit to stop being stuck in roles that are no longer serving us.
Fear in the workplace can definitely hold you back. Unfortunately, we get a lot of negative advice surrounding this area. We are told, “Just do it. Just quit your 9 to 5 for your dream job. Just do the thing that makes you happy.” But that isn’t always everyone’s reality.
Many women have actual bills to pay, mouths to feed, and family that relies on their income. They can’t just up and leave a job, even if they want.
So, the first step to take is to reach out to me. You can no longer stay in that space where you lack the commitment to get the help that you need.
I mentor women daily who are stuck in an unfulfilling role but fear is holding them back. And I promise I won’t just tell you to up and leave your job. We will put together a real strategy to get you into a new role or get that salary increase you are looking for.
Your next step is to honor that commitment to yourself and your career.
We have to commit to discipline in our career. A lot of us aren't disciplined enough. We're not seeing results because we're not disciplined.
If you are thinking, I need to make more money and I need to have more impact in my career. I need to command a higher salary. I need to step into a higher-level role. I need to drive more impact in this industry. I really need to be positioned as an expert in this industry. Then, you need to honor that commitment to yourself to get to that next level, whatever it looks like.
Lastly, we have to stop thinking that office politics are beneath us.
A lot of us approach our career like it's a dictatorship. I'm going to do my job. I'm going to let these people know what it is and what it ain't. I ain't talking to nobody. I'm building no relationships with nobody. I'm going to do my job and I'll clock out, y'all.
You need to build relationships at the office, be savvy, know how to engage stakeholders, know how to work the room, and how to leverage data to tell stories. Those things are required at this stage in career development and too many high-achieving professional women have decided that they don't want to do the hard work of navigating office politics. Office politics are just office politics. Politics don't have to be toxic. It's about approach.
Office politics are just a tool for you to use to get what you want.
Politics are neutral. What you do with politics can either be good or bad. Office politics are actually a tool that high-achieving professional women can use to make more money and have more impact at work and that's what I teach in my mentorship programs.
Book a call with me today so we can discuss what you need to do to get that six-figure salary you are looking for. We will cover all this and more in the Mentor Me Accelerator program.
