Life Lessons in How to Negotiate Like a Pro

So you did the hard work. You applied for the job, had the interview, and now you got the job offer. Yeah, you got the job, you got the job, you got the job! We're celebrating, but there is more to do. You still need to negotiate. Let me teach you how to negotiate like a pro.

It is critical that you understand how to respond and negotiate once you receive a job offer so that you're not leaving any money on the table, you're building a comprehensive compensation plan, and you’re considering all of the other things that you should know when you apply for jobs.

The first thing that you should do when you get a job offer is celebrate. We finally get the offer and instead of celebrating, getting excited, and honoring the hard work, we freak out and get nervous, bringing the panic on ourselves. Oh my gosh; now I have to negotiate. I want to invite you to celebrate yourself. Be proud of the effort that got you here. Breath, smile, enjoy it.

Now typically these days, job offers come by phone. So when you get a call offering the job, that's the time to turn on that listening ear. Listen intently to what they say — every compliment they give, every comment about your interview, every decision for adding you to their team, and every reason they think you'll be a good fit. Next, ask any clarifying questions you have about all the things you heard them say. But lastly, let me be clear with this next step. The one question that you do not ask when you get a call about a job offer, the question you do not let yourself ask is, “is this negotiable?” Because…everything is negotiable.

I want you to be prepared to take this strategy to your next job offer so that you can actually negotiate successfully. If this taps a negotiation nerve with you or you want to get all the details that come with the steps of this negotiation strategy, schedule a call with me this week. We’re going to get you ready.
